Paul D. McCarty Scholarship Awarded

Christina Taylor, a first year student at Lone Star College, Kingwood, was awarded The Paul McCarty Art Award scholarship by the Kingwood Art Society for 2009-2010.

In her application, Taylor stated, “I put my best into every piece I create. In order to challenge myself against what I already know, I try new mediums, styles and techniques. I try to imitate styles of my favorite illustrators in order to learn from their work. I’ve recently dabbled in abstract art, although I believe my gift is in realism.” Her dream is to create character and background concepts for the film industry and to become a successful illustrator. She says “I’ve always loved art from a young age and believe that is where my love for illustration came in. Now that I’m older, I want to create my own stories, characters, and my own vision of the images that I fell in love with as a child for children to enjoy today.”

The KAS scholarship judges were Pat Conroy, Linda Hamilton and Sheila Bridges. There were three finalists and Bridges said “We were impressed with Christina for several reasons, she had an extensive display with different art styles and mediums for us to see. The work was strong and she was already showing evidence of her own emerging art style. We felt that she shows real promise to be a success.

Taylor was accompanied to the awards ceremony held at Kingwood Suites by her parents, Steve and Sandy Taylor and one of her art professors, Mari Omori.

The scholarship is awarded annually by KAS.

Anne Treadwell won the St. Cuthbert's Mill Merchandise Award at the annual  Watercolor Art Society-Houston Membership show held in October. The show was judged by Jan Fabian Wallake and the paintings will hang in the WASH-H gallery all of the month of October. Anne will get to make her choice of 30 sheets of Waterford paper worth $200. Anne said "I have often thought how great it would be not to have to worry about messing up the paper because it costs so much. Maybe this will free me up a bit! I was very, very happy and excited."
Anne and the prize winning painting "Spring at Mary Lake" is shown below.
